How Much Can An Abortion Cost?

The cost of an abortion is determined by several factors, with the biggest determination being surgical vs. non-surgical. If surgical abortion is needed the price varies quite a bit depending on how far along you are and what type of surgery you would have.

Her Health Women's Center can provide information on all of your options, as well as provide you with free pregnancy testing and an ultrasound to confirm your pregnancy. Getting this information can help determine your next steps and give you the information you need to make an informed choice.

COSTS OF MEDICAL/CHEMICAL ABORTION

The cost of the abortion pill can range from $200-$700 depending on the abortion provider.

A medical abortion is FDA-approved up through 10 weeks after your last menstrual period. It can be difficult to estimate how far along you are, so it is best to get an ultrasound to not only date the pregnancy but to also confirm that the pregnancy is in the uterus.

Things to note:

  • Like any other medical procedures, there are risks associated with the medication used.

  • Taking the abortion pill can be life-threatening if you pregnancy is ectopic.

  • It's estimated that about one-fourth of all pregnancies end naturally without abortion-inducing drugs.

  • You will see the expelled embryonic parts in private, usually in one's own home.

Not sure where to start? Her Health Women's Center can confirm your pregnancy and inform you more on your options before you decide.

COSTS OF SURGICAL ABORTION

The cost of an in-clinic surgical abortion in Iowa can range from $500 to $1,500+, but is determined by many different factors that include:

  • How far along you are

  • Single or multiple pregnancies

  • Type of abortion procedure

  • Health history and risks to the woman

These details are determined after an ultrasound is performed, but some terms to know are the different types of surgical abortions. A suction abortion, also known as vacuum aspiration, is used up to 14 weeks of pregnancy. The abortion may include a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) to remove a larger fetus or to remove any remaining tissue. A Dilation & Evacuation (D&E) is typically performed between 15-20 weeks. Induction Abortions are Late term abortions (20 weeks to full-term) and are not available in Iowa or Nebraska.
